going for an Osceola! - Sean B

I'm heading to Florida on Monday to hunt Osceolas and hogs with Jim Dussias and Irv Eichorst of True South Adventures. I'm attempting to take a second sub-species of Turkey in my quest for a North American turkey slam. I'll be taking my 58" PCH II 54# @ 28. My broadheads are all sharpened, bag is all packed....I'm chompin at the bit.

Well, I'm back from Florida. I sat the first morning I had a bunch of hens roosted in some trees in front of me. I had a few of them come to 6 to 7 yrds. No gobbling. That afternoon, I set up where I thought I could possibly get them coming to roost. Nothing. The second day was pretty uneventful. That evening, I set up a blind in an orange grove. I found some good sign, and set up a Double Bull. Morning came, I could hear birds gobbling on the roost quite a distance away. As the sun came up, the gobbling stopped. I also noticed that I was facing the sun!! It was over cast when I set it up, and I just wasn't paying attention. I was sending out soft yalps and purrs with my mouth diaphragm every 20 to 30 mins. well, about 10:15 I caught a scarlet head walking down the row of orange trees. He came in very cautious right to the decoys, I lowly raised my bow arm to draw, but he saw me, and got outta Dodge quick!! There must have been just enough light coming in to give me up. I was as excited as if I had taken him. I was shaking uncontrollably. I've taken around 100 turkeys with a shotgun and 6 with my recurve, this was the most I've shaken on any turkey.
