Saturday Longbeard - MBates

Day #2 in the blind this season and my first tag is punched. This bird came in at 7:30 and gave me a strutting 8 yard shot. I was shooting my 58" PCHX (50@28) Zircote/Myrtle Burl with a Treeshark tipped Gold Tip 5575. He didn't make it 5 yards from the decoy. Good luck to all and shoot straight.

Thanks Denny. Congrats on your bird too. He looks like a big hoss. You're right they are tough. I get more pumped when I stick a Turkey than a big deer I think. Well maybe not but close.

Nice bird!! Turkeys here in SEMO are gobbling real good as the DOC predicted. But, they are all hanging up at 50-60 yards. Had 2 this morning rattling the timber. One came into about 65 yds. & stood in one spot for 3 hrs. doing his thing. After about an hr., he squatted to bed down. I would call & he'd stand up, gobble, strut, drum, & bed down. No hens around. Never took another step in my direction for 3 hrs.. Had decoys out but he never saw them (thick timber). Any tricks to deal with these big mature gobblers who expect the hens to come to them? Been T-hunting since the 60's & I don't seem to know the right one.

Hey Darren, yeah the PCH and I hit it off pretty quick - it shoots great and it has mojo ! And yes I like to make it happen quick when I can - it makes up for all the times it plain doesn't happen. LOL.

Good thing it happened yesterday because the weather today is HORRIBLE ! Severe thunderstorms and ALOT of wind. Not favorable conditions for a ground blind. Of course I wouldn't have gone either way - today is my youngest daughters 2nd B-Day. Today is a good day no matter what the weather does. Happy birthday to my little turkey ! And lord help us she's already driving !

Happy birthday to your daughter. I guess the weather shut the turkeys up here too today according to the texts I received this am.

Yeah wet stormy weather does not make them real happy. It definitely a good day to be inside eating birthday cake !

Nice bird MBates ,That's a good way to break that widow in!I killed a button buck with a simmons broadhead a few years ago that's a mean one.I had trouble sharpening them so I stopped using them but they do leave awesome bloodtrails.

There's a real informative video on You Tube showing a good method to sharpen Simmons heads. I tried it & it will get them hair shaving sharp. It's the one where the fellow shaves hair off his leg. I tried that too. How did that work for me? Not so good! Keep band aids & antiseptic close by. Went back to slicing a thick rubber band stretched tight to test sharpness.

Its actually very simple to sharpen the Simmons. I will start a new topic later today and explain how I did it. It took about an hour to sharpen a half dozen - nasty sharp !

I just heard from dad (aka Old Vet) this morning at 7:30. He just killed the third bird of the three amigos. There were three longbeards together when he killed his first bird last Tuesday, then two when I killed mine on Saturday, and now the three amigos are no longer. There is still an older (or meaner ?) tom on this farm that locks up with the hens every morning. I will try my patience on him this weekend. More to come ............... Congrats dad !

Congratulations, nice bird Mike! Are you going to have it mounted? The nearest area we can hunt Wild Turkeys is about a 4 hr. drive from home. It's on my bucket list. If you don't plan to mount him, can you send me some tail feathers for fly tying?

Thanks Ted. No I'm not going mount him. I have one bird mounted with 1-3/4" spurs. He was a once in a lifetime bird for sure. I sent the tail feathers to a friend of mine. He makes feathers for his daughters arrows. He prefers the tail feathers since they are not as rigid and she shoots a light poundage bow. If I shoot another bird I will definitely send you some. Good to hear from you. Take care.
