Squapan bear hunt update - OBXarcher

Squapan bear Hunt.  The days are running together as I am typing this on my phone, sitting in the stand on Friday. My memory isn't what it used to be. I will only tell some and let he others fill in and correct my mistakes  Came in on Saturday met tony and his family. Mike (Monk) was also there.  Sunday Gil and his nephew Austin arrived. Good kid. Next to arrive where Rudy and uncle Jim. Uncle jim was there last year and never saw a bear. He is still one of the most positive upbeat guys (and energetic ) I have ever met. He's always ready to go an hour and half before anyone else. Then the twins brian and mike. Both x-navy like me so we hit it off. Insulting each others bows, shooting etc. like only squids can do. The black widow boys roger and Toby showed up and also brought Toby's 13 yr old daughter candy. Very nice girl and Toby will need more than a bow to chase  the boys away in a couple years. Roger from Michigan showed up with his bride of 30 years. Their anniversary was tuesday of the hunt. What a girl. Last but not least was last years champ Sean. He killed the biggest bear and got a new BW out of it. Very sweet bow. The other guides showed up. John the Canadian. Dave the doctor ( he says he's a sleep pathologist but I think he's better suited for proctology) Reno, Tony's dad, and mike and his son tommy. These guys take time off work to put these hunts on and I can tell you it ain't for the money. Between bait, fuel, permits, food for everyone it aint cheap. They love hunting.

Monday 2:00pm we hit the road. Took a while to get everyone to their stand. I can't remember all the stand names some are pretty funny. Sean sat the plane crash named after dah..... A plane crash that happened 50 yrs ago. He saw a small bear first night he passed on. Austin shot. 125# bear with his 30-06. Bear went about 50 yds. He was very happy. He shot our bows all week and is planning on getting a recurve real soon. Pretty sure brian and mike also saw bears on Monday. One was too small and the other did not present a shot.

Tuesday. We went out a little earlier today. I was at the very furthest stand. Think they call I the cliff. If you go any further you fall of the earth. It is way back in the woods off of a 4 wheeler path, funny thing is they drive Tony's truck back there. About 6:05 I hear a twig break, look up and here's my first black bear coming in. I reach down turn on my camera. The bear comes in nice and easy. I am trying to look the bear over as this is my first bear Hunt. The bear is definitely a shooter to me. It has a big belly on it. It  Gets about 2 yds from the barrel and stops. He or she puts the nose in he air and turns to leave. I am on my feet and the bear pauses at 10-12 yds quartering away left to right. I draw back look at a spot behind the should and release.  To my surprise and disgust the arrow hits high and back. It definitely hit spine by the noise it made. It was not enough to break the backbone. The bear takes off. I use a string tracker so I sat there and watch string go out for about a minute or two. Fast at first then slow, then just a bit. I thought about 200yds of line went out.  I texted tony and told him the story. He told me to sit tight. After dark we took to the trail. It was easy at first due to the string. Blood  was plentiful and we had no problems for quite a ways. Problem was we went a long way and no bear. We thought we may be pushing him so we back out. Came back the next day. Big thanks to Toby for going to help out. He likes to track bears and carry big handguns..... More on that later. Any ways we looked for 3 hours and never found my bear. With the bad shot I would have had to get lucky with the artery and I didn't.  Rudy also saw one Tuesday. He shot thought he made a good shot. Another bear comes in but he already shot so he watches. Bad thing was he missed the first one and this one was really the one he thought he shot.  Wednesday comes.  Nothing seen by me. Two bears shot  Thursday comes. Nothing seen. One bear shot by Roger He shot high like the rest of us. His arrow looked good, they had good blood. Tracking in the dark they think they may have bumped the bear. Like with all shot animals if you bump them out of their bed chances of recovery goes WAY down. Sad fully that is how this one ended the next day no bear. To make matters worse during the tracking Tony asked Toby (from here on out to be known as butter fingers) If he wants to carry his 44 mag just in case. Toby takes the gun and proceeds to track Rogers bear through some really thick stuff. When they get all done Tony asks for his gun back and Toby reaches down and grabs an empty holster. Somewhere on the trail the pistol fell out. Search as they may they never recovered the pistol or bear. We now have a fear that the bear is not dead, finds the pistol and comes after every bow hunter he sees.  That brings me up to today. It is 4:00pm I'm in the stand and need to pay attention.

Shopping at LLBean tonight. Headin into camp in am. Dropped my PMA on concrete steps yesterday. String actually popped of bow and few nice gouges. My heart almost stopped and thought I might cry. Re braced, few twists. Back in action, though a bit battle scarred unfortunately.

Well the week is over and it wasa blast. No bear heading home with me but that's all my fault. Tony and his guides did everything I expected and more. Friday no bear seen by me but we did see three moose heading back to the lodge. Cow, yearling and then a bull. Wow, first moose I've ever seen. Can not wait to hunt them someday, maybe they are a target I can actually hit.. Friday we also had lobster for dinner, and a lot of it.. I ate 4 of them myself and then had some adult beverages around the fire. Great evening Saturday night was the last sit. weather was perfect and I was hoping for one of those last minute kills we always see on the hunting shows. Sunset was 7:15 pm and shooting light was around 7:30. All evening my stomach was VERY upset, I mean rumbling and I cramping bad. Lobster was coming back to haunt me. At 7:10 during that magical time I could not take the pain any more. I climbed down, cut a sleeve off my shirt and proceeded to relieve myself about ten yards behind the stand. With my business done I climbed back up. Very upset with myself for ruining the last hour of the hunt I tucked my hands in my pockets and stood there. Not 2 minutes later I hear huffing behind me. I look back and there is a bear smelling my waste !!!! He then proceeds to come right to my ladder. He stands on his hind legs, put both paws on the third rung and looks up at me. I think he was looking for the source of the stink in his woods. He then dropped down and started walking out the trail that we came in on. I took a shot alt about 6-7 yds, in hind sight I should have not shot. The angle was too steep and we did not find this bear. There was no exit wound. We gave him 3 hours. Tony, Dave, Mike, Joshua, Adam, Ty and myself where in the woods till 2:00am looking for him. I am sick over it. I vow I will practice more from tree stands prior to any more hunts off the ground. I will post some pictures when I get home and get them on computer Thanks again to everyone at camp, it was a blast and I wil be there next year

Good luck to the guys of week 2!! I had an awesome time. This was my third hunt with Tony & Lynn and I felt just as home as I did for the first 2. It was great to see Roger, Toby and Monk again and to meet Mark, Mike, Bryan, the "Other" Roger, and Jim. Sorry, but I never really did get last names!! I only saw one small bear the entire week, but that's ok with me. This has turned into my favorite hunt of the year. Monk, deserves the respect or any die-hard bear hunter for sitting a stand two days in a row from sun up to sun down. We had our lobster feast on Friday night. I think we all pitched in for 70 of those sea bugs!! I don't know nuttin about no lost gun........

It was good to get home Sunday after a 1800 mile drive. Had a great time again! Didnt manage to bring home a bear but I did make up for it in Lobsters. As for this lost gun talk that ole loose lips is refering to, let me give the story. While tracking a bear that was hit the night before we decided to make one last sweep toward the river and then meet at the ATVs. Tony gave me his gun (since I was the most responsible one there)in case I ran across the wounded bear. As luck would have it I did run into the bear. While trying to get through some of the thickest underbrush you could imagine I walked right up on the bedded bear! He stood up and must have been 12 feet at the shoulders! I went for my (Tonys) gun but before I could get drawn the bear he lunged at me and knocked the gun out of my hand! As the 14 foot giant came at me I pulled out my knife and jumped on! When the bear had had all of the Tobster he could handle he started to retreat! I chased the 18 foot monster until I lost him. As I made my way back to the attack scene I noticed that the gun had been stolen! That my story and I'm stickin to it!

Heard rumor that it was one of those backwoods bears that stole that there gun. Rumor has it that the gun could be traded for at least a dozen widow bows to arm the bears for the next time the legendary Tobster enters the north woods. Was also rumored that Tony was brokering the deal for the bears.

Well guy, Day two It rained buckets until About 6:30 pm. We had a bear come in on the plane crash At 7:10 Our trad hunter was set up on the ground in a double bull. He shot missed the bear and hit the drum on the rim! Close! Down on the big pine was another story! Our hunter from CT had a lone bear come in from the swamp at 7:15. He made a well placed shot and it ran about 40yrds and then came the big moan! Sorry Roger R And Sean both seemed to be good bears. The Big Pinebear was a 150lb boar. Monk, We got big action still at your bait. Camera showed a big bear in at 8:04 lastnight and a midsize bear at 6:48 this morning.Real windy today but no rain. Lets pray for a goodnight! will keep you posted! Tony

Hey Sean. I'll zap you his cell. My son Alex started calling him Uncle Jim last year and I see it really stuck! He's a GREAT guy who I'd love to share a huntin camp with anytime!! Tony and I laughing tonight just telling stories of the two of them around camp last year. Some pair, 60 some-odd year old Jim and my then 13 y/o son....we couldn't tell which one was funnier! But they really bonded over the week with Alex still talking about / texting him etc. Hunting camp that much better when you can make new good friends and re-connect with old ones.

Well... Always have a blast w/ Tony, Lynn and the kids. Really bummed my son couldn't make this year ( high school football like a religion :-) ). Weather really worked against us. Poured first two days then real windy rest of week. Great guys in camp made it fun. Young guy on his first outfitted/guided hunt tagged out Wednesday w/ compound on beautifully furred 150lb boar. One gent from MO saw one and missed clean. His brother, who was in camp w/ his 13 y/o son, saw two one night but no shot and little one last night but didn't shoot. The young guy didn't see anything either. They were a great family and ton of laughs. Really enjoyed being in camp w/ them. That's huntin'! Ill be back next year!

We would like to say a big thanks for all hunters who came to hunt with us this season! It was a pleasure to have each of you in camp with us. Mark, Well better luck next time! Sean, your bear will be bigger next year! Uncle Jim, We'll tie one up for ya next year! Rudy, your killing my barrells! Brian and Mike, My kids thank you for all the returnables! Roger R, I new the big pine would pay off!Monk, 3rd time is a charme!Gill and Austin, Its gills turn first next season! Week 2. Josh and Levi, We had a blast! Levi you need a guide that does not sleep on stand! Wess, How do those bait drums taste like? Aaron, Nice bear and easy tracking! John, well all i can say! Are you and uncle jim realated? Week 3! FINALLY smoke pole hunters! Really slow week, But we had our best day all season with 3 bears killed on Saturday!! The baits are smoking hot! Adam, Josh, and Wayne, Congrats on your bears! Alittle upset with adam. He got a bear with a nice white blaze! Should have been mine! Were switching gears this weekend with one of our camps full of hound hunters and the other with moose hunters. We are booking pretty hard now for 2014! So if anyone wants a spot let us know. Lynn and I were out today planning our next cabin. Were hoping to have it up before the snow hits. So Roger you won't need to stay at the Hapden! Last but not least! Ole Tob and Roger, Thank you so much for all you do. we would not have made the Widow week possible with out your support! See ya all soon! Things I learned this fall! 1. Bait drums attract arrows! 2. Bears like ladders 3. Lobsters are a bear great lure! 4.string trackers don't have enough string! 5.Tampons do have other uses! 6. Its ok to leave the stand, If you need to go! 7. Don't even lend your best friend your gun! Or atleast tell him that the gun sometimes falls out! 8.Bears do have ground shrinkage! Tony
