Wow, The hunt is only a month away and there's not a whole lot of chatter on the site about it!! Tony, Who's all going?? I have to work a double shift on Saturday morning, so I wont roll into camp until Sunday afternoon sometime. I'm bringing both my PCH and my KB. I'm not sure which to hunt with.....I'd lie to break in my KB, but the PCH has mojo going for it!! Hey Tobe, How many lobsters do you think that you're going to do this year?? Looking forward to an "Awful Awful" and a Whoopie Pie!!!

Hey Sean, I would think that we'd have alot more chatter about now! We have the baits in and going now! stands and blinds are out. Working around camp getting things ready for all you die hard trad junkies! Can't wait! Not sure if toby will be coming with Roger yet? He called a couple days ago and is on the fence! So please guys drop him a line and tell him to get to Maine. He wants to bring his 13 year old girl. We hope he does. Roger don't take no for an answer! We still have one open spot guys! We maybe willing to give a great deal to fill it! Tony

Practiced again today. This is a group of tree sharks from about 25 yds. Going to hang a stand in back yard so I can get a little elevation practice in. bow is a PSA gross grain graybark, 53 @ 28, got her dialed in pretty good, as long as I do my part.

Recurved.... From both new shooter as well as new bear hunting perspective all I can say is read watch and listen to folks on this site. Read books, (Fred Asbell is my personal favorite) and listen to what Tony will be teaching you in your time at SquaPan! Keep in mind to have fun. Find someone who will comfortably mentor you...not someone rigid with a " it's this way or its wrong" mentality. Listen to Tony B.! And above all, have FUN,

Be sure to bring your thermacell. Bugs can be pesky in the evenings.

Be patient and try to avoid unnecessary movements. Start your thermocell before you get to your stand. DONOT put out any of your own bear attractants. If you're not seeing anything the first two days, again, be patient. If the bait is still getting hit, the bears are still around. Try to avoid changing locations unless To y asks you, or feels its best. Listen to Tony and his guides. The know the situation better than any one. Be alert. Bears don't make a whole lot of noise. You won't hear them. Mine from last year came in right under my stand. I didn't even know he was there till I saw him. They just appear!!! Gettin close, can't wait!!

Thanks for the advice........I also can't wait..... I was looking up the weather average temps. For those of you that have gone before, how warm do you dress for? Do you have to walk very far/long to get on stand?

Re:

Squapan
August 8th, 2013 08:08:13pm
Thanks for the kind words guys, The walks are 100 yards or less. Give or take a few yards. It really is a game patients! Be still on stand make your moves very slow. Start your thermacell at the truck. Get in the stand and get ready before we leave your stand. It can happen in seconds of us driving off.Stay in your stand at all times! even if you shoot. No leaving the stand unless your guide is with you. Its very easy to get turned around in these think woods! Ask the guys about trailing Seans bear last year! Tony

Harvest a bear or not, I think this is going to be one awesome hunt. Getting a bear would just top it off. For those of you that have gone before, how warm/cold do you suggest to dress for?

Re:

It will be warm when you get on the stand the middle of the afternoon and then cool off in the evening. You will need to dress a little warm at first so you won't be moving and putting on extra clothes in that magic time right before dusk. Be sure and bring rain gear. Bears appear out of nowhere and at anytime with no warning. You just look up and they are there.

Rogers right, you don't want to be layering up right when ol' Yogi shows up. You may want to pack some light clothes Just in case.... 2010 was abnormally HOT. I hunted in shorts and a Tee, with my mesh leafy wear over top.

I was warm last year right up last hour or so, then cools down. Light stuff, layered wy to go...and yes, you don't want to be playing with clothes last hour of light...at that point you should have two movements, a blink here and there, and drawing your bow!! Definitely invest in a thermacell if you agent already got one. Use fresh pad when u get out of truck and make sure u have plenty of fuel for uninterrupted evening. Last thing u want to do is click that baby on at dusk...it's LOUD in those still North Woods. I've bear hunted around the US and Canada and it CAN be a very buggy proposition. They are incredibly spooky, cautious, remarkable creatures. Twice I didn't know anything was near me until some errant breeze (or maybe movement a movement ) caused an explosive sounding freight train to crash through the woods...talk about a dejected feeling! Thank God, and Tony, that my 13 y/o (at the time) connected on his first bear!!! I'm sooooo excited to get up there! Truck pointing north August 31 ( missing Widow Week unfortunately for second time!) As I said earlier, I've been blessed to be on a lot of hunts, literally around the world ....Tony is one of the very best I've ever been with. He and Lynn offer a phenomenal experience, a REAL hunt, a comfortable safe clean camp frankly at an unbeatable price. You will to be disappointed :-))

I want to leave now! Aside from the great fun/hunting it's a beautiful area. Also the great friendship Tony and I (and our sons) have developed, I want to get up there so we can hang! The only crummy part is my son starts high school this year so he can't make it...freshman football been going all summer and he can't miss any practices during Widow Week and he has his orientation in middle of second week..DAMN!!!!

All I can say is if you plan on bringing any lobsters home you better get them before I do. Last year I think I ate 5 but I aim to beat that this year. Cant wait to meet the ones I havn't met and share some huntin stories with everyone. My PLX is needing some action. Arrows are flying straight and broadheads are sharp. CANT WAIT!!!

Broadheads are all sharpened, clothes are just about all packed. I'll be leaving early Sunday morning. I'll be stopping in Northern New Hampshire to have lunch with a friend from Tradgang. I'll be driving my 2002 Chevy Pick Up with 193,000+ miles on it. If any of you see a lonely bear hunter hitch hiking his way to Mapleton....its me!! Have a safe trip every one!
